How to plan a private dinner party at home
Short and practical.

Start with the guest list
The number of guests decides the format. Up to about ten works well plated. Beyond that, family style or stations keep food hot and the evening relaxed.
Collect dietary needs early
Ask about allergies, kosher standards and preferences before choosing the menu, not after.
Choose a menu with a rhythm
A good menu moves from light to rich and ends with something sweet. Three to five courses is plenty for most dinners.
Plan the timing
Decide when guests arrive, when you sit, and when dessert is served. A chef cooking on site can time each course to your pace.
Book early for busy dates
Weekends and holidays fill up. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable; for weddings and large events, earlier.
